This has been a long time coming. But it’s time. I need to get healthy. I’ve been in sort of a denial state about my general overall health for awhile now. For the most part I don’t have major health problems, I don’t drink much, I don’t smoke, I sleep okay, I can do most activities I want to do, I have low blood pressure, average cholesterol, etc. But I am overweight and not just a little. A lot.

But it’s time. As far as I know I’m done having kids so that excuse is out the window. I don’t have a tiny baby anymore so there goes that one too. It’s time to get healthy. And honestly this time I think I have the right attitude because I’ve done this before. A couple of times. This time I don’t care what the final weight is, I don’t care what clothing size I end up in. I care that I am eating well, taking care of myself, and being good to me. My recent creativity boom has opened my eyes to the value of what I have. And I want to keep it.

I do have some goals, some pretty big ones actually. My long term goal is to get down to a healthy weight within a year. If I make that goal Chris and I have an agreement that I can choose one of the following two rewards – a MacBook of my own or a Canon DSLR, both are highly motivating. The second big goal is to make exercise a habit. I actually like exercising when I’m doing it and I love how it makes me feel but for some reason I have periods where the thought of doing it is just daunting. So it’s time to get moving.

The last time I had any sort of success at all I made sure to document it. And often. I’m going that same route again. So as time goes on don’t be surprised to see random posts about how it’s going. I also hope to participate in Blog to Fit. It’s a nifty little community of bloggers trying to get healthy. And I am SO in.

Thanks for joining us (and for using our scale!)
Those are some awesome treats in store for you if you win! Ask Chris if I can choose the one which you don’t. :)

Good luck on your journey. I need to get on board too. This time of year is a hard time for me to find the motivation, what with all the holidays and the cold weather. But I’m trying. :)

    Hi Jen -

This year I feel like I really need to get in shape. I can’t believe how out of shape a person can get sitting at a computer. I have started to do some exercises you can do at your desk. I saw them on a morning show. I didn’t think that would help much but I guess I’m in worse shape than I thought. They actually make my muscles sore.

Instead of taking a break to do them I go read a blog and do them while I read. I also got a juicer and like the juice a lot more than I thought I would. You can mix and match so many fruit and vegetable combinations I haven’t got tired of it.

The hard part I keeping it up. I’ve already tried to sabotage myself a couple times. I keep telling myself it won’t be long til the first snow and I’m the one with the shovel. I hope we both can stay focused on our goals to get in better shape and make healthy choices.

Blogger Dad – LOL. I asked him. That was probably the quickest no his ever given me second only to “Can I get a minivan?”

Debbie – This is a tough time of year to start but I’m hoping that going into it realistically will help me not sabotage myself.

John – That’s very interesting about the desk exercises. I spend a fair amount of time up and around during the day as a teacher but I need to push myself to do more.

Love – Thanks! I’m anxious to read how your journey goes as well. And wow, when you put the months out there like that it’s a bit staggering – 37 months. Wow.

  6. [...] I was surfing the blogosphere today, I happened upon a great blog post on Deconstructing Jen that inspired me to write about my fitness goals. Yes, I have been thinking about getting fit [...]

    Hey Jen,

I just wanted to let you know that Jenny has a membership to 24hr fitness, I thought you and Chris did too. Anyway, I know she’s ALWAYS looking for a gym partner, so if you are looking for one while Chris has the kids, give her a ring.

  8. I know you can do it! Good luck and let me know if I can help in any way! I can be your own personal cheerleader!

That’s a great way to look at it!
I’m fortunate that I have a friend who teaches exercise classes here in town—I “try” to make it 3 times a week. It makes such a huge difference in my energy levels.
