Harlequin Crochet Baby Blanket

In the quiet moments of the last couple of months I’ve been steadily working on a couple of crochet projects and I just finished one up in the wee hours of the night last night. I didn’t initially intend to stay up that late but there is something about the drive to finish a project when you get to the last couple of rounds of edging.

The pattern for this one is called Greenway and it’s available as a free download here courtesy of Berroco. It’s a harlequin crochet pattern or Catherine Wheel type pattern. I used I Love This Cotton yarn for this as I wanted a soft cotton and it worked up wonderfully and I only ended up using about half of the yarn I anticipated so that was nice.

This finished blanket is wonderfully soft and my husband desperately wanted me to make it into a full sized blanket for the house once he was able to see the pattern coming to life. I may have to start another one once I finish up a couple other projects though this was a bit of a slog to get through. This pattern is beautiful but not a quick one to stitch up, at least not for me.

For the edging I did three rounds of single crochet in pale grey and one round in navy. I didn’t want to do anything fancier than that as the stitch pattern of blanket has enough going on and I think it is a nice contrast of texture. 🙂

Jen, your blanket is a work of art; I love that your husband is encouraging you to make another for you home! So incredibly pretty and I can’t even imagine the time invested! Keepsake, for sure! I’ve not ventured into crochet…you’re inspiring me to do.

Jen, This is a beautiful blanket that would be a wonderful gift to receive! Can you tell me how many skeins you would use to make your adult size blanket, larger than the 45″ wide and 60″ long? I’m a knitter, so I’d love to try crocheting this. Thank you!

    1. Hi Jen,

If I were going to make this larger than the 45×60 listed in the pattern but using the same colors used in the baby blanket I’d likely get the following just to make sure I had enough. I have a tendency to get more than I need though just to make sure I have enough.

      308 Pewter (3 skein), 310 Dove (5 skeins), 306 Dark Denim (5 skeins), 300 Pale Denim (3 skein), 60 Red (3 skein)

I hope that helps. 🙂 Good luck if you decide to make it!

  9. This is beautiful, Jen and I can see why hubby wanted it for the home – I really must try to get back into my crochet after learning ‘how to’, last Christmas! Maybe I’ll start with somethihng a little less ambitious?! Hugs, Lisa x

For the baby blanket how many did you chain?

    1. Hi Liz! Thanks for your question! I don’t remember what I used for the beginning chain, unfortunately. But after a little looking at my pictures I’m pretty sure I did a repeat of 16 so I would have chained 129 to start.

Oh wow. This is fantastic! I have no idea how to crochet but I would love to learn. This especially has me interested. Wonderful work!
