Spellbinders | Snow Garden

Happy Thursday! I hope you are having a wonderful week so far. This is my last week of summer before heading back to work/school next Wednesday. It’s going by so quickly! We take my oldest back to college this Sunday and it’s an exciting year for her – she’s getting her first apartment with roommates and will be living off campus. Fingers crossed for a easy transition for her.

Today I have two cards to share with you using products from the Spellbinders Snow Garden Collection by Susan Tierney-Cockburn. This collection is beautiful especially if you love to make rustic and detailed holiday cards (my favorite!).

The first card I made used the Hemlock, Cones and Chickadee Etched Dies from the collection. This die set comes with a small die to make the pinecones (cut 2 or 3 times to make one cone), the branch and the bird. I used all three in this card. To start I ink blended the card background with Sweet Basil and Olive ink from Taylored Expressions. Then, I did cut 5 branches from Sweet Basil cardstock, coloring the stems with brown OLO markers. To add the gold, I sponged Versamark onto the branches then dipped in gold embossing powder, brushing a little off to make the coverage a little uneven.

Next I made three pine cones. To do this I die cut the pine cone die 8 times from Toffee cardstock. Then found the easiest way to build these was to work in layers, each layer being two similar sized pieces at a time. I worked from the base up, bending the “petals” up after attaching two pieces together. The final pine cones ended up being three large layers and 4 small layers. After attaching these to the branches I splatter with white and black watercolor.

To finish up I die cut the chickadee from white cardstock twice and colored with OLO markers (once on the front and once on the back) so I had two birds that faced each other. The sentiment was hot foiled using the Glimmer Hot Foil System with Gold foil.

Card Supplies:
Dies: Hemlock, Cones and Chickadee Etched Die collection (Spellbinders), The Snow Garden Sentiments Hot Foil Plate and Die Set (Spellbinders)
Cardstock: Sweet Basil, Toffee, Sugar Cube (Taylored Expressions)
Ink: Sweet Basil, Olive (Taylored Expressions), Versamark
Other: Gold embossing powder, white and black watercolor, OLO markers, Glimmer Hot Foil machine, NUVO liquid adhesive

My second card uses all the same products with a little bit of a different layout. I paired up the branches a chickadee with the Stylish Ovals dies and the Infinity Punch and Pierce Plate for a different look!

To create the snow dusted look of the branches I used the same technique as the gold but with white embossing powder. The chickadee is again colored with OLO markers and I added two little pinecones with a bow at the top of the branch cluster.

The sentiment is from The Snow Garden Sentiments Hot Foil Plate and Die Set foiled with gold foil on Sweet Basil cardstock. The background ovals are cut from Cherry Pop and Red Pepper cardstock. The lacey background was cut from Buttercream Frosting cardstock. To tie everything together I splattered with a bit of gold shimmer watercolor.

I hope you’ll check out this gorgeous new collection from Spellbinders – there are lots of other amazing florals to see!
