Spinning Granny Squares

Paintbox Yarn

Hi all! It’s been a LONG time since I’ve posted about my crochet projects. But that definitely doesn’t mean that I haven’t been working on them. My goal is to get caught up! I’m going to start by diving in to my current work in progress, a bright bold rainbow granny square blanket using the Spin Your Granny Square Blanket Pattern. This starts with basic granny squares and joins them diagonally to give granny squares a fun new look!

For this blanket, I used Paintbox Yarns – Simply Aran. This is one of my favorite acrylic yarns. It’s soft, it washes well and so far in 18 skeins, I’ve encountered just one knot. The colors I used are listed below (I made a couple of adjustments from the picture above for color balance.)

Paper White – 200 (5 skeins – may be more depending on how the border goes)
Raspberry Pink – 243
Pillar Red – 214
Rose Red – 213
Blood Orange – 219
Mustard Yellow – 223
Buttercup Yellow – 222
Lime Green – 228
Grass Green – 229
Marine Blue – 233
Sailor Blue – 239
Pansy Purple – 247

My process for creating this was to work through creating all of the squares first. After completing one square I took measurements of the square and then created a diagram on diagonal grid paper I found online. The diagram helped me determine exactly how many of each color and how many colors I need to use. True confession time – I ended up remaking the diagram 4 times to get it exactly how I wanted it. This became even more important later as I started joining squares together. This is the grid paper I printed.

After creating all the squares I started making the white triangles the fill in around the edges. You could also create these out of the colors that coordinate in each row, but I liked the look of the chevron like border so I make them white. I made about half the triangles and started joining because I just couldn’t wait!

I’m about 1/3 of the way through joining and can’t wait to see how this progresses, it so much fun to make and I’m loving the bright sunny colors!

If you’d like to give this a go, all of the info on the project is listed below:
